Change is Inevitable

Change is Inevitable. Such a profound and unique statement! I, like so many others, have heard this statement put in various ways. Why is it that we are afraid of change? Sometimes change can be good. The universe has been created around change, the different seasons, the storms that come, the snow that falls, the day and night. Change is a part of life, we start changing the minute we are born, the newborn, the toddler, the terrible two’s the kindergartener and oh…the awful teens. Why aren’t we accustomed to change?

What is it about change that we have such a difficult time accepting? When we were young we welcomed birthdays because we knew we would one day be an adult and able to make our own decisions. Something happened after a number of these joyful occasions and we became disgruntled when someone asked our age. I never understood the comment, “It’s rude to ask a lady her age”. We know that considering the option, aging is a gift.

I went to church on Sunday and our Pastoral staff had changed the order of service. We have two services going on simultaneously. Usually, our Pastor will teach in the gym service while we are worshipping and praising in the sanctuary. Then at the end of our worship and praise, he will teach in the sanctuary. Last Sunday, he decided to teach in the gym service and simulcast the sermon to the sanctuary. The worshippers in the sanctuary are mainly baby boomers; needless to say we were upset. We wanted the Pastor to be physically present, not watching him on a screen. As I left church I could hear fellow parishioners voicing their frustration. Why where we upset about this change?

Then it came to me that it wasn’t only that we had no control, it didn’t benefit us. Simply put, I am sure if the staff could have shown the Baby Boomers how we could benefit from viewing the Pastor on a screen, we might have been willing to consider the change. It Is not that we don’t like change, we don’t like change when it does not benefit us. Could it be that we only like change when it is in our best interest?
As we grow into our golden years,; it’s not that we despise getting old, we despise what age represents. We dread losing our eyesight, hearing and mental clarity. If only we could find some benefit in aging. As I searched inwardly for benefits I found that I enjoy my perspective on life as I age. Everything is not a crisis, and most of the time it will be okay. I have learned not to fret over things I am not able to fix. Most of all I don’t really give much thought to what others think about me, I call this the “Free At Last” stage.
