You’re Never Too Old to Learn!!

A short time ago I attended a personal investing workshop in Atlanta, GA.  It was an interesting experience.  I learned about investing and how the gurus invest.  It’s not really hard, it’s just a lot of things to remember and a lot of trends to look for.

I thought that it would be education overload to learn about investing in a short weekend.  I was right!  Luckily the instructor gave us plenty of resources to use, but I will tell you it was a lot of information!  The workshop started at 8:30 am and went until 10:00 pm for two days and Sunday we got out at 3 pm.  Of course we had breaks in between, but it was an experience.  I found myself zoning out around 9 pm.  Many of the participants were still raring to go at 10 pm.  Of course, they were much younger!  They are used to staying up crazy hours!  At least that is my experience with my own children.

As we progressed through the information, I found myself still feeling a bit lost.  It was great that they had investment coaches around helping us out and answering our many questions.  Interestingly, I was not the oldest one there.  We had a some 70 and 80 year-olds learning how to invest.  I thought that was pretty awesome!  That gave me inspiration.  If they can do it, so can I.

There is a false belief that the older you get the harder it is to learn anything.  I definitely disagree with that idea. The fact is that it is really important that we continue to learn as we get older to keep our brains active.  New learning experiences like investment classes and many other topics are available in our communities.  If you research the Parks and Rec organization in your county, they may have all kinds of classes that you can take advantage of at a small cost or for free!

We are living longer, more active lifestyles.  Keeping our bodies healthy is one thing, but keeping our brains healthy and sharp is quite another.  As we get older, there is the fear of dementia and Alzheimer’s looming over us.  It doesn’t have to be that way!  There are plenty of resources, classes, and tools that are available for older adults to keep our minds sharp.  I highly encourage Boomers to take a class or two.  You may learn something and have fun with it!
